Hereford Homeless Support FAQs
1. How can I make a homeless application?
If you’re homeless, you can apply for help through a homeless application. The amount of help you get depends on your situation. The council must help anyone who’s homeless or at risk of homelessness and meets immigration and residence requirements.
2. How do I apply for homeless assistance?
You can apply in person, by phone, or by email. If you can’t get through, keep trying – council homeless teams are usually busy.
If you don’t have a place to stay tonight, go to the council office in person. In Hereford, the office is at Blueschool House. You don’t need an appointment, but make sure to arrive early.
If the council office is closed, there’s an emergency number you can call: 01432 261600.
3. Who can apply for homeless assistance?
You can apply if you’re homeless or at risk of homelessness within the next eight weeks. This includes situations where you:
- Have nowhere to stay tonight
- Are sofa surfing with family or friends
- Have been given notice to leave by your landlord
- Are at risk of domestic abuse
You may also be legally homeless if you can’t afford to pay your rent or if your home is unsafe to live in.
4. What should I do if the council turns me away?
If the council turns you away before you can explain your situation, visit The Living Room or contact organisations like Shelter for advice and support.
5. What documents should I bring when applying?
It can be helpful to bring the following documents:
- Proof of ID, such as your passport
- An eviction notice or a letter saying you must leave
- A letter from your doctor about any health conditions
- A letter confirming you’re pregnant
6. What is the council required to do?
The council must assess your housing needs and create a personal housing plan. This plan outlines the steps you and the council should take to help you keep your home or find a new one.
7. What happens if I am homeless?
If you think you might be homeless, meet immigration and residence requirements, and have a priority need, the council must provide emergency housing immediately.
Priority need includes situations where you:
- Have children
- Are pregnant
- Are vulnerable, for example, because of a disability
8. What can I do if the council says they can’t help me?
If the council says it doesn’t have to help you, you can:
- Ask them to review their decision
- Seek advice from a housing advisor at The Living Room, Shelter, or a solicitor
